For Independent restaurants, food trucks and caterers

Toast software starts at $69 a month, with add-ons on a quote. Own FoodKit for $149 once.

Menus, online ordering, a kitchen display, food cost tracking and reservations, except the code is yours and nothing is an add-on suite.

The verdict

FoodKit replaces Toast for independent restaurants, food trucks and caterers: a one-time $149 instead of paying from $69/mo indefinitely, and you own the source code and the database. Keep Toast if you need an in-person point of sale with terminals, handhelds, offline mode and integrated card readers. FoodKit is a web app, not a POS system, so a full dine-in operation will still want Toast or a similar POS.

Why operators leave Toast

Six reasons that come up over and over.

The math, over time

Toast pricing is from $69/mo, forever. FoodKit is $149 one time. Here's what that means at common operator lifetimes.

Even at Toast's lowest listed price of $69 a month, FoodKit pays for itself in about 2.2 months. The chart counts the software price only: your own hosting is extra, and Supabase and Vercel both have free tiers.

Toast lists a Starter Kit from $0 a month, Point of Sale from $69 a month, and Build Your Own at custom pricing. Add-on suites (online ordering, marketing and loyalty, payroll, scheduling, food cost) are quoted. A payroll bundle for new restaurants is $69 a month plus $9 per employee. Toast works only on approved Toast hardware, and card processing runs through Toast. Starting software subscription. The Starter Kit lists $0 a month with a hardware kit and no upfront cost; Build Your Own is custom pricing. Source: pos.toasttab.com/pricing, read 2026-10-26. You pay your own hosting (Supabase free tier covers most small operators) + Stripe's standard 2.9% + 30c on payments. No platform middleman fees.

What's actually different

Feature parity is table stakes. The real shift is ownership.

Add-ons become built-ins

Online ordering, a kitchen display, food cost tracking and scheduling ship inside FoodKit, so there is no suite to price after you sign.

Your guest data stays yours

Customers, order history and preferences live in your own database instead of inside a vendor platform.

No hardware lock

FoodKit runs in a browser on whatever devices you already own.

How switching works

Most operators take 2-3 weeks end to end. We handle the data migration; you handle the customer-facing brand polish.

  1. 1

Decide what stays on a POS

If you serve dine-in guests, keep a point of sale at the counter and move online ordering, menus and back office to FoodKit.

  2. 2

    Deploy FoodKit

Accept the repository invitation and follow the README to deploy on your own Supabase and Vercel.

  3. 3

    Rebuild your menu

Enter categories, modifiers and your 86 list, and connect your Stripe account for online orders.

  4. 4

    Open online ordering first

Take online orders in FoodKit while the dining room keeps running as it does, then decide what else to move.

Questions we hear

Does FoodKit replace my POS?+

No. FoodKit is a web app for menus, online ordering, a kitchen display, food cost, reservations and staff scheduling. It has no card terminals or offline mode, so dine-in service still needs a POS.

What does FoodKit cost to run?+

FoodKit is $149 once. You pay your own hosting; Supabase and Vercel have free tiers, and online card payments use your Stripe account at its standard rate.

Does it do loyalty and gift cards?+

No. Customer records and order history are in the CRM, but loyalty and gift cards are not part of FoodKit.

Do I need to be a developer?+

You deploy it once by following the README, or send a custom request for setup. Daily use is point and click.

Own your operations.

FoodKit ships with for restaurants, food trucks, and catering operations. One purchase, no per-seat fees, full source ownership.
